GPS Soil Sampling and Variable Rate (VRT) Prescriptions

 

What is grid soil sampling?

​

  • Grid soil sampling is different from traditional soil sampling.

  • When grid soil sampling, we use a GPS receiver that has your field boundary on it and a grid that is placed over your field boundary. This grid can vary in size from 1 acre to 20 acres. The two most common grid sizes are 2.5 acres and 5 acres.

  • A point is placed in the center of the grid. A soil sampler then goes into your field with the GPS receiver and takes a minimum of 10 probes from around that point to create one sample. This sample then represents the soil that is within that grid.

  • The smaller the grid size, the more accurate representation you will receive.

What is the benefit of grid soil sampling?

 

  • Creates a spatial reference to associate with your soil test results

    •  Instead of receiving soil samples for a field and having no idea which part of the field they are from, you can now receive a colored map showing where the results are from and where nutrients/fertilizers are needed in different areas of your field.

    •  

  • Puts your money where it is needed 

    • There could be a large amount of variability within each of your fields. Why not put the nutrients/fertilizer where it is needed instead of a blanket, single rate application? We have the technology, so let us put your money where it is needed.

 

I grid sampled, now what do I do?

 

  • Once we have grid soil samples, we can create variable rate fertilizer/lime prescriptions for your fields. This way you do not have to apply a single rate to an entire field. We can vary the rate to account for the variability in each of your fields.

  • Placing nutrients/fertilizer where it is needed might save you money, but that is not its purpose. The purpose of VRT is to place the nutrients/fertilizer where it is needed and not over-applying in areas where it is not needed. Hopefully having a positive impact on your wallet as well as the enivornment!
